Expansion Vote Narrowly Misses Approval |
|
In what definitely seems to be a reaction to world economic turmoil, the E.C. Scranton Library’s expansion project, 8 years in the making, was heartbreakingly and narrowly defeated on the Nov. 4, 2008 referendum in Madison. Final results showed almost equal Yes and No votes, 5,036 to 5,487 (difference of 451 votes, about 4%). Voters in District 2 and absentee voters tended to be against the proposal more than those in District 1. You can see the entire vote breakdown at http://madisonct.org/Clerk/docs/results110408.htm
Library - Yes Inc. greatly appreciates the loyal support and unbelievably hard work of our many volunteers. It is wonderful to see the resolve and energy of those who love libraries and appreciate how important they are to our society. We thought the bonding referendum would pass in spite of the dreadful economy in the final few weeks of the campaign. Ultimately, we could not prevail against that rushing tide.
Library Trustees, along with Town officials, are studying next steps. Presumably that will be a re-worked proposal at some time in the future. Stay tuned – we will prevail over those who think libraries are dead in the Internet age, and that our current overcrowded library is “good enough”. |

The Library Trustees are very concerned that the expanded library be as sustainable (green) as possible. Being green will not only save energy costs and reduce our carbon footprint, but it is the responsible thing for a town building to be. |

- Last year people borrowed 316,187 books, audio books, CDs and DVDs from Scranton Library,
for free, that would have cost them over $7,900,000 to buy.
- The social and intellectual benefits to the town are incalculable.
