Find out the Top 10(+) Reasons Why Madison Needs a Better Library |
| |
| The last Library expansion occurred before the internet revolution and the great increase in demand for Library programs, especially those provided for younger children. A larger facility is necessary to keep pace with the expanding service requests by the citizens of Madison. |
|
A Treasure for everyone in Madison |
- Scranton Library serves everyone in Madison – adults, children, teens, toddlers, and seniors.
- Library usage is growing faster than our population, and is twice the state average.
- Library programs provide essential educational opportunities, especially for pre-K children.
|
Space Issues |
- The Library today is cramped, noisy, overcrowded, and inefficient.
- The children’s room, built in 1965, does not have enough space for existing collection – let alone their hundreds of popular programs
- The library’s modern “book collection” now includes CDs, DVDs and electronic books, vastly outstripping the capacity provided in the 1989 expansion.
- Quiet areas for reading and study have shrunk drastically in recent years.
- The few available meeting rooms cannot meet demands of residents or community groups
|
Changes in technology |
- The number of computer workstations is woefully short of state standards – but there is nowhere else to put them
- Wireless internet access attracts people to the library, but there are no quiet places to sit
|
Outdated structure |
- The original Henry Bacon-designed Scranton building is over 100 years old
- Heating and air conditioning systems are outdated & inefficient
- Absence of onsite parking inconveniences everyone, and a major obstacle to disabled persons and parents with young children.
- Library does not meet current ADA and building safety codes
- Staff work spaces are ad-hoc and inefficient
- Book returns must take place within Library doors
